Do you need an electrical outlet for a Japanese toilet?

Share

This is THE question to ask yourself before buying a Japanese toilet: do you need an electrical outlet in the toilet? The answer is yes. Hot water washing, heated seat, drying, automatic opening: all these functions require electricity. Here is how to prepare your installation safely.

Why a Japanese toilet needs electricity

A Japanese toilet is a fully electrical appliance. Electricity is used to:

  • heat the washing water;
  • heat the seat;
  • power the hot air drying;
  • operate the nozzle, automatic flush, seat, and remote control.

Nelsmann Japanese toilets operate on 220 V with a standard European outlet. Good news: most include an emergency flush, so you can flush even during a power outage.

Where to place the outlet?

Ideally, the outlet should be placed next to or behind the toilet, at a distance that the power cord can reach without being stretched. A few common-sense rules:

  • No extension cords or power strips: plug the toilet directly into a wall outlet.
  • An outlet with grounding, which is mandatory for an appliance that combines water and electricity.
  • An outlet protected from splashes: avoid placing it directly under the water supply or flush with the floor.
  • For a wall-hung model, the outlet can be installed inside the support frame, with an access panel. This is the most discreet solution.

What does the NF C 15-100 standard say?

In France, electrical installations in homes must comply with the NF C 15-100 standard. For a Japanese toilet, keep these points in mind:

  • Protection by a 30 mA residual current device (RCD): the circuit must be protected by a high-sensitivity RCD, which cuts off the power in the event of a leak.
  • Toilet in the bathroom: the standard defines "volumes" around the shower and bathtub where outlets are highly restricted. If your toilet is in the bathroom, the outlet must be placed outside these areas.
  • Separate toilet: the requirements are simpler, but the outlet must remain protected and grounded.

The exact rules depend on the layout of your room. If in doubt, have an electrician confirm the location.

I don't have an outlet in my toilet: what should I do?

This is very common in older homes. Several solutions exist:

  • Run a line from an adjacent room, either surface-mounted under a cable duct or recessed if you are redoing the walls.
  • Take advantage of renovation work to install the outlet in the support frame or partition wall.
  • Hire an electrician: it is a quick job that guarantees a compliant and safe installation.

Think about it at the start of your project: it is an item to include in your budget. To find out if the investment is worth it, read our article smart toilet: is it worth it?

What about safety?

Water and electricity are a good match when the appliance is well designed. Nelsmann Japanese toilets are CE certified, and models such as the Kaku are IPX4 waterproof (protection against water splashes), with an outlet protected against electrical leakage.

The summary before ordering

  • A 220 V grounded outlet near the toilet.
  • A circuit protected by a 30 mA RCD.
  • No extension cords or power strips.
  • A water supply nearby.
  • A drain compatible with the chosen model (check the technical specifications).
